Aside from use of the lightning gun mentioned before, colliding with other aircraft and taking hits by enemy fire will-obviously-draw you HPs as well. Now, unlike in 1942, which-obvisously-is the prequel of this game, where you had several lives but your plane took only one hit to go down, in 1943: The Battle of Midway you can take several hits but you have only one life represented by a health-bar divided into three colored sections, green, yellow and red, respectively. The use of the special attack is, however, limited by the amount of your remaining HPs, as each time you use the ‘lightning gun’ a portion of you HPs disappear from your health-bar. If you press both buttons at the same time, the plane performs a loop which gives you the ability to get behind your enemies and give them what they deserve. You control your aircraft with an 8-way joystick and a pair of buttons, one for firing the main guns and the second one for launching a special attack that eliminates all the bullets and enemies present on the screen. The final sixteenth stage then ends with a confrontation of the Battleship Yamato herself.
Each stage ends with a boss-fight, either in the form of one of the famous ships of the Japanese Royal Navy or an enemy bomber group. The game consists of sixteen stages in total. I mean, come on, if you don’t know this legend, how do you even dare to call yourself a gamer, huh? Unlike that happy bunch who got to play the NES port of 1943: The Battle of Midway as kids, I always dodged the real deal NES cartridge like the proverbial bullet, knowing it merely from emulators and such.ġ943: The Battle of Midway is Capcom’s classic top down vertical shoot’em’up game, where you play as a pilot of an American P-47 Lightning fighter, operating within the Pacific theater of the WWII. Now, I’ve been really looking to play this game.
